About Us
Southern Fork Farm is a small diversified farm that currently grows a variety of vegetables and pasture raises turkeys, pigs, and chickens (for meat and eggs). At Southern Fork Farm we use regenerative, organic and permaculture inspired agricultural practices in everything that we do. The guiding principles of Southern Fork Farm will always be to do that which is: Good for the land. Good for the animal. Good for the farmer. Good for the community. Although we have not gone through the long and expensive process required to be certified organic, we utilize organic and permaculture practices on our farm. We grow our vegetables without synthetic herbicides, pesticides, or fertilizers. Instead we use natural methods, such as companion planting techniques to attract or repel certain insects and enhance plant health. We also use compost, cover crops, crop rotation, and natural amendments to improve the soil in our vegetable gardens. In the same way, though we are not certified humane, we raise all of our animals in a humane way. We respect our animals and their natural tendencies. In fact, we partner with our animals to improve the quality of our land. As an example, even though our KuneKune pigs don't root as much as other pigs, they still do their fair share. If, as we rotate our pigs through their paddocks, we left the rooted-up ground alone, we would soon have a very rutted, uneven pasture. To avoid that, our laying hens follow our pigs. The chickens come behind the pigs and scratch and peck the ground smooth again, fertilizing as they go. It's actually quite amazing what a small flock of laying hens can do! Our pigs are rotationally grazed on pasture and are supplemented with treats from the garden. KuneKune pigs were bread to thrive on pasture alone, so they don't require pig feed. However, in the winter when the grass isn't enough, they are supplemented with local Non-GMO pig feed. Our meat birds and turkeys are also rotationally grazed on pasture and supplemented with treats from the garden. They are fed local Non-GMO feed and processed humanely on our farm.
